Throughout the series, Fry has shown he's willing to go from hell and back for Leela and he didn't even want to 'hang out' with Amy, and it's not because he's afraid of commitment.

The vast majority of men view Amy as an occasional roll in the hay (which took place between her and Fry in this episode ). In fact, Fry did merry her at one point in the series. Leela is the type of girl whom the vast majority of men could see marrying, raising a family and spending the rest of their lives with.

The beautiful Leela is for love and Amy (who is extremely unattractive by Western standards) is for lust. The two female leads in Futurama correspond to a dichotomy in the male psyche.

In this episode as well as other episodes throughout the series, Fry is shown to have lower standards for looks of women for casual / no strings sex, than for relationships and pursues the beautiful Leela for a relationship but only saw Amy(who is clearly unattractive) as casual sex material. Not only is Amy ditzy but she is also very ugly. He doesn’t love Amy and he just got sick of her. The deliberate parallel in Amy and Leela's lines couldn't make it more obvious that we're expected to compare Fry's reactions and conclude which of the two he is willing to get serious about. ( later in the episode.) Leela: I actually enjoyed hanging out with you. Case in point… Amy: Y'know Fry, I really like hanging out at you. If sparks didn't occur between them, we'd start to wonder what was wrong, So they went ahead and explored that avenue, and made it clear that Fry did not find Amy attractive nor did he have any deeper attraction for her. Fry and Amy are close in age and in general outlook, and both are sexually eager.

Fry's behavior towards Amy in this episode indicates that Fry was unwilling to sustain a romantic relationship with her.

Instead of treating Amy like a person, she was an object to be used as needed and discarded when something better comes along. Because Amy is not desirable to Fry it’s a) easier to hook up with her and b) more permissible to use her at his convenience. He instead goes for a ride with Amy and they end up having a short-lived affair.

Fry asks Leela out on a Valentine's Day date, but she angrily refuses.

As a result, Fry kicks Bender and his explosive butt finally blows up, saying ' MY ASS! MY BEAUTIFUL ASS!'. Some of the nerves in Fry's neck were apparently rewired so that Fry's left leg hits him every time he touches his neck. The next day, Zoidberg reattaches Fry's head to his now-repaired body and everything returns to normal. Fry quietly thanks Leela for the assistance. He soon winds up talking about various technical minutiae, distracting him from leaving with Amy. She saves Fry by tricking Gary into talking about banking industry regulation. Luckily for Fry, Leela spots him across the room and comes over. Gary invites Amy to go home with him in hopes for a one night stand, over Fry's unwilling protestations. However, all these dates are flops, as Bender merely rounded up a bunch of strangers from the bus station and they all leave for the bus ride home. After returning to Earth, Fry breaks up with Amy and she makes Valentine's Day plans with another man named Gary.įry, Amy and Gary wind up at Elzar's Fine Cuisine, where all the people who applied to Bender's dating service, including Leela, are with their dates. Fry, in shock, discovers that his head has been grafted onto Amy's shoulder in order to keep him alive. Fry wakes up to find Zoidberg telling him that his body was badly damaged in the crash. Zoidberg agrees to come with them, but when Fry asks him to drive, he crashes the car. He asks Leela to come with them on a picnic to Europa they had planned. With Valentine's Day approaching, Bender decides to start a computer dating service. While getting towed away, she and Fry begin making out. Meanwhile, Bender refuses to get the recommended safety features that would reduce the risk of 'catastrophic butt failure', namely explosion, in a low-speed collision installed because they make his butt look like that of a human.Īmy asks Fry to take a road trip to Mercury in her new rocket-car, but they break down after they run out of gas.
